the peg center

The PEG Center for Art and Activism, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit, develops and hosts exhibits, lectures, discussion groups, educational events, and activist programs to increase community awareness and engagement related to the environmental crisis, social justice and human rights.

We collaborate with artists, activists, experts, and organizations to provide comprehensive education to spur social change. Our motto is "Educate-to-Motivate-to-Activate."

“We're invigorated by our collaborations with The PEG Center for Art and Activism and feel lucky to have them as a neighbor. Not only do they amplify important issues and provide a vital space for people to convene, but their focus on creative expression and public art opens doors, giving anyone who wants to participate opportunities to express themselves in innovative ways. One of the driving forces helping the community of Newburyport and the Merrimack Valley to develop more equitable and inclusive networks, they are committed to their work with a rigor that is rare.”

What We've Achieved

  • Created four Community Art Projects to encourage people to express their concerns with environmental, social justice and human rights issues. Our first project culminated in two murals installed on the Rail Trail that expressed what was “lost” and “found” during the pandemic.

  • Planted the Edible Avenue Garden on the Rail Trail near March’s Hill with indigenous fruit and nut bearing plants.

  • Hosted more than 50 speaker events, meetings and exhibits related to our areas of focus.

  • Collaborated with regional organizations to support and promote their events and projects.

  • Encouraged conversations on timely topics with experts to educate and activate change.

  • Participated in demonstrations to support activist causes in our community.

The women in action huddle

The Women in Action Huddle is our group of activists who put into action what it takes to affect change. They hold collection drives that benefit area social services agencies. They engage in letter writing and attending rallies.

The Huddle volunteers maintain two public garden plots on Newburyport's Clipper City Rail Trail from which produce and edible plants are provided to residents and a food pantry.

 The Huddle meets monthly.
